Stabilize mind and life in balance

Maharishi Patanjali in his book Yoga Sutra has emphasized on balance of mind for true development and success in life. He says that without calming the turmoil of thoughts and emotions of the mind, neither spiritual nor worldly progress can be made. His teachings are applicable not only in yoga but in every aspect of life.

Patanjali says that the mind is like a lake. When its water is stable, it shows a clear picture. But when it is turbulent, everything becomes blurry and distorted.

This situation happens in our life. Thoughts that arise in the mind – such as fear, anger, greed, and attachment – corrupt our way of thinking. In today’s busy life, people face stress, anxiety and emotional ups and downs. Due to this, their decision-making ability, their productivity and well-being are directly affected.

Just as Patanjali talked about balance of mind, similarly Mahatma Buddha also talked about avoiding extremes. Both are almost the same things. Before attaining ultimate enlightenment, Buddha adopted both the path of rigorous penance and luxury, but did not find satisfaction in either.

Ultimately, he adopted a middle path – a path based on balance. Buddha emphasized on living with meditation and awareness. Buddha explained that balance of mind frees us from every excess of mind like craving, hatred, lust and greed. This liberation makes it possible for us to live with wisdom and compassion.

Not only Buddha, Swami Vivekananda also described the power of a balanced mind as the key to success in life. He believed that a calm and controlled mind could do extraordinary things. But a restless and doubtful mind becomes the biggest hindrance.

His historic speech at the World Congress of Religions in Chicago in 1893 was the result of this mental balance. He said, “The quieter we are, the more we will love and the better our actions will be.”

In fact, through a balanced mind we can improve our practical everyday life. We can take right decisions. Decisions taken in an angry and disturbed mind always prove to be wrong. With a balanced mind we can face difficult situations better.

We can stop the distractions of the mind because a balanced mind always keeps us energetic and with the help of this energy, we do not allow ourselves to become weak.

Now the question arises that how to attain a balanced mind?

So, Patanjali says that regular meditation reduces the negativity of the mind. Buddha emphasizes living in the present moment. Swami Vivekananda considers it important to maintain control over one’s desires and emotions. Whereas Bhagavad Gita teaches to immerse oneself in action without being concerned with results. If you can do this then balance will start becoming stable in your consciousness.

Keep this thing in mind that balance is the solution to life’s problems. There is only one way to achieve the four goals of life – Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha – balance.
