Are you drinking enough water daily?

The water you drink throughout the day not only keeps you charged and hydrated; it is also considered important to stay hydrated. Your body’s water management, water budget is a delicate thing and remains hydrated. It also controls your calorie intake and your body weight. Thirst has no relation with hunger, hunger is a different thing and thirst is different.

The National Academy of Medicine (US) recommends drinking 3.7 Liters of water per day for men and 2.7 Liters of water per day for women. This also includes aquatic drinks. Other sources also include water coming from aquatic vegetables, salad (cucumber, radish, carrot etc.). Alcohol will not fall in this category which dehydrates the body – one drop of pure alcohol absorbs 1000 drops of water from the tongue.

Water keeps your joints lubricated, acts as a lubricant and prevents them from becoming dry. Be it a long run or any exercise or workout that requires high oxygen consumption and strength, water helps maintain your stamina.

It is just a myth that one should not drink water while sweating. Forget about long distance runners, many people keep a water bottle with them even during their daily long walks. Adequate water intake also helps you in keeping your mood happy, alert and energetic and in maintaining short-term memory. Due to lack of water your anxiety increases.

When you remain hydrated, your heart easily sends enough blood through the arteries and in such a situation your muscles also easily remain hydrated and lubricated. By remaining dehydrated, you increase the work of your heart. The heart has to work harder to pump the same amount of blood into the arteries.

Staying well-hydrated reduces the risk of urinary tract infection. The possibility of kidney stone formation increases when you remain dehydrated, because the mineral salts present in your urine start forming crystals.

Cucumber, radish, carrot, celery, lettuce, crisp fresh raw broccoli only counts towards the amount of water you consume. They have their own importance in food. You get all the essential minerals from here.

Your digestive system works well when you stay hydrated. When you remain thirsty and lack water, your stool (stool or excreta) becomes dry and constipation occurs. Often our elders drink much less water than required. The body, deprived of hydration, withdraws the water content from the feces.

Our kidneys can handle only 100 millilitres (in common parlance, 100 grams or one glass of water) per hour.

Now in such a situation, someone should gulp down ten Liters of water at once, even if in a very short time, after taking one breath, drink the second and then the third glass of water… then the kidneys will respond. Disposing of this water is beyond their limits. This is a medical condition and if not taken care of immediately, the person may die.

In the case of watertoxemia, the excess water in our body causes the mineral levels to drop dangerously low, hence the condition is called hypo (i.e. below normal levels) natremia

Your body is like a field, water it only as much as is necessary for its smooth functioning. In some medical conditions, such as in cases of prostatic enlargement, drinking a Liter or more of water at one go is not desirable. This increases the work of the kidneys.

There are many other benefits of maintaining adequate hydration of the body. Due to this, the duration and intensity of headache remains tolerable and less. On the other end of the spectrum, in cases of migraine (a full-blown headache), lack of hydration can trigger migraines.

To stay hydrated and avoid dehydration, always carry a water bottle with you, whether it is a walk or any other type of outing. In the restaurant, the waiter brings water first, sip it. Try to include fruits, salads etc. in your diet, this should be 40 percent of the diet.

This is not accidental; it has been said – water is life. Most of our body is water. In adults, on average 57-60 percent of the body remains water. Before one year, the amount of water in babies is 75-78 percent, which reduces to an average of 65 percent after one year.

Two-thirds of the total water present in the body remains intra-cellular (between the cells) and the remaining one-third remains outside them. Water is the basic raw material of our cells which is used to help in the growth of cells. Water is our natural thermostat. While water is needed in the metabolism of proteins and carbohydrates in our body, it is also an essential commodity for saliva, which plays an important role in digestion.

Water is a mechanism for removing debris, unwanted waste and non-essential substances from our body. Only the amniotic fluid protects the foetus. Water of the body is an innate grief absorber. Protects our heart, brain and other vital organs. Therefore, drink water regularly and stay healthy.
