why we failed to understand smartphones

In the course of evolution, it took about one million years for humans to reach from their first species Sahelanthropus tchadensis to the second species Orrorin tugenensis. It took us so much time to get down from the trees to reach the ground. As important a change as this was in evolution, we saw almost an equally important change again, but this time it did not take even three decades.

1. Smartphone generation

The generation has changed in the last 27 years and Generation Z, born between 1997 and 2009, is the first generation, got smartphones and internet directly in their hands when they left childhood.

This is the first generation of humans who are more concerned about their image in the virtual world than the real one, who spend time on online branding and who have accepted the screen as truth.

According to author Jonathan Haidt, the current generation is progressing in a completely different way from the way humans have evolved to reach here.

2. Smartphone captured our valuable life

As long as the phone was just a phone, it maintained a lot of relationships, but as soon as it became smart, it came in the way of relationships.

Today, the biggest concern of sociologists is that the new generation is not connecting with each other. Things like talking directly to friends, hanging out with them, playing, doing mischief are becoming less common. Smartphones have taken over our lives to a great extent.

3. Principle of middle path

However, no technology is completely negative nor positive. Which aspect of it is more dominant depends on its use. In the case of smartphones, we are missing that balance, which is mentioned in Indian philosophy.

Mahatma Buddha gave the principle of middle path for balance in life and freedom from suffering. The middle path means adopting a balanced path while avoiding extremes. The eightfold path given by Buddha for this also includes right conduct and right concentration.

So,

Is our behaviour and concentration right when it comes to smartphones?

4. Cause of sadness

Author Jonathan Haidt writes that, between 2010 and 2015, anxiety, depression and even suicidal tendencies have increased rapidly among youth around the world. He gives the example of America where the number of teenagers who suffer from sadness and depression for a long time has increased by 150%. This problem has become more serious since Covid. Although it had started even before the pandemic.

5. Shocking report

The report of a study conducted by Meta regarding Instagram was received by American whistleblower Frances Haugen. In this the company had admitted that tension and depression are increasing due to Instagram.

About two years ago, in December 2022, another study was conducted on the impact of smartphones on human relationships. According to this, 67% admitted that even when they are with their partner, they remain busy on their smartphones. 89% admitted that they do not spend as much time as they could with their spouse.

6. Is Smartphone a villain?

There is no evidence of harm, but even then the smartphone is not a complete villain. Psychologist Pete Etchells explained that there is very little evidence about the harm of digital devices.

Due to smartphones, the digital economy progressed and it changed the face of the entire world, especially India. As an example, Innovations like UPI have empowered the common Indian and made real-time payments simpler than could have been imagined with the normal banking system.

According to an estimate, the contribution of digital economy in the country’s GDP can be up to 20% by 2026. India’s digital economy will be worth one trillion dollars by 2028.

7. Promote e-commerce

The e-commerce market is progressing with the help of smartphones. Amazon became the world’s largest e-commerce company because of smartphones. Worldwide, retail e-commerce business is expected to cross $4.1 trillion by the end of this year. Technology gave us Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix and Google. Their total market value has exceeded 3 trillion dollars.

8. Learning everything is so easy

TRAI’s data till March this year shows that there are about 120 crore telecom subscribers in India, while the number of internet subscribers has reached 95.4 crore.

Digitization has helped in spreading education and awareness. Today the world cannot run without smartphones. This is the biggest platform for learning.

But the biggest problem is

excessive use of smartphones, which is affects our daily life. We don’t use smartphone to do our daily life easier, we use smartphone like that, we don’t leave from us anytime and suffered so many health with mental problems, by which our so-called valuable time wasted.

That’s why,

Lord Krishna In Gita and Buddhism says that, “so much attachment to someone is also a cause of suffering”.
