Rising sea level threatens the world’s coastal areas – WMO

Our beautiful Earth, where 97% is water and only 3% is land. Out of this 97% water, only 1% is potable water which we can use in our daily life and the remaining water is saline. All these water bodies make our Earth a habitable planet. But nowadays this water body is proving dangerous for us.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says that according to the report of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the sea level is doubling since 1993, which is very dangerous for the countries in the coastal region.

1. About WMO -:

WMO (World Meteorological Organization), is a specialized agency of the United Nations. WMO makes forecasts about weather, global climate and water resources. The current headquarters of WMO is in Geneva, Switzerland. It was established on 23 March 1950, that is why every year we celebrate 23 March as World Meteorological Day. Now WMO has 193 member states and territories and they exchange all types of information with each other.

2. About the WMO Survey Report -:

On 15 February 2023, the WMO announced a survey report in which they reported sea level rise. So, after reading this survey report, United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said that this is a very serious situation for the countries of every coastal region because the sea level is rising at double the speed since 1993.

Due to which the condition of countries like India, Bangladesh, China, New York, Netherlands, Argentina and other coastal region countries may become worse.

In the Indian Ocean the leaves grow up to 7 mm. Many states in India are on high alert. Another state in between that state is Odisha. In Odisha, districts like Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Ganjam are on high alert.

The sea level at Paradip-Puri has risen by 5 mm and the sea level at Bhadrak-Baleshwar has risen by 3 mm. If this happens, it means that by the year 2050, this entire coastal area can go under water level.

3. Why is this type of situation arising?

Earth, where water is found only 1% in liquid state and 2% in ice form i.e. hard state. Due to change in climate and global warming, this iceberg starts melting and mixing with sea water.

Due to which the sea level starts rising and due to the unreasonable increase in temperature every year, the icebergs are melting faster than before.

But why is global warming and climate change happening?

We humans are responsible for this situation.

But how????

Only 31% of the land on Earth is covered with forest. Forest is the only thing that can control the weather. But to fulfil their needs, humans are burning the forests, cutting trees and after doing this we are not planting trees; hence the trees are decreasing, Due to which the percentage of forest is also decreasing.

Therefore, the number of forests in our earth has reduced so much that it has become impossible to keep the climate stable. This type of situation has already started and we all are facing this situation of temperature rise.

The temperature in the summer season in the year 2022 has broken the 130-year temperature record and already IMD (Indian Meteorological Department) predicts that the earth’s temperature may rise by 2°c this year, which is much higher than in the past. So due to this increase in temperature, icebergs are melting rapidly and the sea level is also rising rapidly.

4. How can this situation be controlled?

Here another fact has come to light, carbon dioxide gas is increasing due to increase in industrial sector and vehicles. Due to which the problems of global warming and climate change are increasing. The common root of all these is cutting of trees.

When we build an industrial area, first of all we cut down all the trees in that area and when we build a road or a bridge for vehicle transportation, so first we clear the forest but after clearing it we do not plant trees and if we plant trees then it will take time for the tree to grow, which time we do not have anymore.

If we all humans remain careful and plant trees, this situation can be controlled. Increase the level of forest so that we can survive on this earth.

5. Is this situation controllable!!!!

Yes, this situation can be controlled at present and we can also save our future, if we take wise steps from now.

So, what is that smart action?????

Plant trees and setup for a secure life in the future. If we humans do not stop this climate change, temperature rise, sea level rise, (now the same things) in the present time, then be prepared to face the cataclysmic disaster of nature in the future.
